Vitamins For Eye Health

It is common knowledge that eating healthy is critical for a strong body and that often means taking supplements for additional nutrients, but many people are unaware that there are vitamins for eye health that can promote eye health. Although these vitamins will not cure specific eye disorders and taking them will not guarantee you will not develop an eye problem in the future, they can certainly help keep your eyes healthier.

There is a reason your mother told you to eat your carrots, as one of the vitamins for eye health that protects eyes from damage is beta-carotene, which is found naturally in carrots, sweet potatoes and kale. Research by the American Academy of Ophthalmology shows that beta-carotene may actually slow the development of age-related macular degeneration. Other studies have shown that this vitamin also protects against night blindness and dry eye syndrome. However, smokers should avoid adding beta-carotene to their diet, as there has been a link between supplements and lung cancer.

Vitamins A, C, and E

Three vitamins for eye health – A, C and E – offer many benefits to the eye. Vitamin A contributes to the health of the retina, and a deficiency of Vitamin A can lead to a form of childhood blindness. Vitamin A can be found in beef liver, eggs and milk. Vitamin C may slow the progression of macular degeneration, lower the risk of cataracts and could have an impact on the development of glaucoma. Vitamin C is found in strawberries, kale, oranges and cantaloupe. Vitamin E protects the eyes from damage, and when taken with other antioxidants may slow the progression of macular degeneration. Find Vitamin E in almonds and sunflower seeds.

Zinc helps decrease the risk of night blindness and may slow the development of macular degeneration. Some research shows that zinc may also slow the progression of cataracts. Zinc is found in dark meat turkey, oysters and beef.

When combined with Vitamin A and C, selenium is a vitamin for eye health that has been shown to decrease the risk of macular degeneration. Selenium is found naturally in foods like crab, shrimp, Brazil nuts and brown rice.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Lutein and Zeazanthin are two antioxidants that promote eye health by preventing cataracts and macular degeneration. In addition, these vitamins for eye health protect the center of the retina from harsh and strong light. Find these antioxidants in yellow peppers, chard, broccoli, and mangoes.

Although these vitamins for eye health will not cure eye diseases, and taking them will not guarantee you will never have an eye problem, they can provide nutrients for your eyes that can keep them healthier.
