Ask the Experts: Spring Allergies

by Dr. Luke Barker

Why are my allergies so bad in the spring?!

Welcome to Austin, the allergy capital of Texas! Along with all our great outdoor adventures, trails, swimming holes and parks, comes a healthy dose of pollen, mold, dander and other allergens. Especially in the spring months, when everything is blooming. Allergies can make a beautiful spring drive with the top down or a day at Barton Springs turn into a nightmare of itchy eyes and uncontrollable sneezing.

Common eye symptoms of allergies include redness, puffy eyelids, watering eyes, itching and even blurry vision. Allergies can exacerbate other eye problems, like Dry Eye Syndrome or even Keratoconus.

Treatments include symptomatic therapies (antihistamine drops, cool compresses, no rubbing, exposure prevention) as well as tolerance and avoidance therapies. At Mann Eye Institute, we perform allergy testing for 60 of the most common local and seasonal-specific allergens, to help with diagnosis and therapy success.

Don’t stay indoors this spring, when you can conquer allergies with help from the professional team at Mann Eye Institute.
