Blepharoplasty (Eyelid surgery) is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. The goal of blepharoplasty is to diminish the amount of excess or sagging skin, muscle, and fat.
If you are bothered by upper eyelids with drooping skin or by eyes that look tired due to puffiness or bags, blepharoplasty may be right for you. The procedure can be performed in the office or ASC, depending on specific medical criteria.
During upper eyelid blepharoplasty, your surgeon creates small incisions along the natural creases of the upper lids to remove excess skin and fatty tissues. The incision, which is typically in your natural eyelid crease to reduce visibility, is then closed with fine sutures.
During lower eyelid blepharoplasty, an incision is made inside the lower eyelid to remove excess fat and skin from the lower lids. This can reduce bags under the eyes and help you look less tired, rejuvenated, and more youthful.

Upper blepharoplasty can also improve visual function. In these cases, insurance often covers the cost of upper eyelid surgery; especially if it hinders your vision.

Lower blepharoplasty addresses excess skin and puffiness and is a cosmetic procedure. For this reason, lower blephs are not covered by insurance.
