I got glasses before I could even talk or walk. I was one of those babies with the glasses that coil around their ears. Through childhood, I was always self-conscious about my ‘coke bottle glasses’ (thick lenses). I had six eye surgeries growing up, so needless to say, I have trust issues with my eyes.

Even in adulthood as a teacher, my middle school students would tell me, “Miss, you’d be so much prettier without glasses.” Regardless of all of this, I had resigned myself to think that I’d probably wear glasses forever, so I needed to suck it up and ignore my insecurities.

My husband got LASIK at Mann Eye Institute last fall and watching how smoothly and easily his process went gave me the courage to schedule a consultation. I went in telling the staff, “I have difficult eyes, I don’t know if I can do this,” but they were so detailed and thorough each step of the way, explaining why I could. I was nervous, but the staff’s friendliness and attention to detail calmed my nerves and made it such a painless (literally and figuratively!) experience.

Now, I wake up each morning and reach for the place my glasses used to sit on my nightstand. I workout, and I don’t have to push my glasses up every minute from sliding down my nose if I sweat. I can read street signs. I can buy sunglasses and not worry about having to get prescription lenses put in. But more than anything: I feel confident.

Glasses had been a part of my life for so long that I learned to live with them even though I didn’t want to, but the freedom of eyesight without lenses is a freedom I thought I’d never be fortunate enough to experience, and I’m so grateful that Mann Eye changed that. Thank you, Mann Eye!
