Comprehensive eye exams are extremely important for your overall eye health and preservation of your sight. It is common for many people to not know what to expect at an eye exam, and that’s OK. The eye doctors at Mann Eye Institute know exactly what to do and will guide you through the process. You may need to have your eyes dilated during your eye exam. This will depend on the reason for your exam, your age, your overall health and your risk of eye diseases.
During a dilated eye exam, special eye drops will be used to widen your pupils, allowing more light to enter your eyes. This provides your eye doctor with a clearer and more comprehensive view of the inside and back of your eyes, enabling them to thoroughly assess your eye health. Dilation can help with diagnosis of dangerous eye diseases before they become harmful to your vision.
Some experts estimate that approximately 5 percent to 10 percent of pre-school aged kids and 25 percent of school-aged children have vision problems. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), all children should have their eyes examined. Young children without vision problems or risk factors for eye or vision problems should then continue to have their eyes examined at least every two years throughout school.

To better understand the differences between optometrists and ophthalmologists, you can think of optometrists as primary eye care providers and ophthalmologists as specialized eye surgeons.
Optometrists work at the primary care level and often perform diagnosis and preparation for treatment planning. It is common for Optometrists to diagnose nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. Then, they can determine if glasses or contact lenses, or perhaps some type of laser vision correction, will help provide you with clear vision. It is also common for optometrists to treat conjunctivitis, blepharitis, dry eye syndrome and can even diagnose glaucoma.
Optometrists need a Doctor of Optometry degree, which requires the completion of a four-year program at an accredited optometry school, preceded by at least three years of pre-optometric study (biology, chemistry, physics, english, mathematics) at an accredited college or university.
Ophthalmologists are medical eye doctors who perform eye surgery and can often work in conjunction with Optometrists. Ophthalmologists perform a wide variety if eye surgery including cornea surgery, corneal transplants, LASIK eye surgery, cataract surgery, retina surgery, glaucoma surgery, eyelid surgery and more.
