WHAT IS LASIK?
LASIK is the world’s most common form of vision correction surgery, and here at Mann Eye Institute, we’ve taken this science and made it into an art. This procedure is generally safe, effective and has very few side effects. It involves sophisticated laser technology – two different lasers to be exact (you’ll learn more about what they do below) – in order to treat the three most common vision issues:- Nearsightedness (you can’t see far away)
- Farsightedness (you can’t see up close)
- Astigmatism (blurring at both distances)
What does that mean for you? Better outcomes, fewer side effects. It’s a win/win.
How does LASIK work?
Work: that’s what we want LASIK to do, right? Here’s how it all goes down: LASIK works by changing the shape of your cornea, which in turn changes the way images focus on your retina. It’s technically a two-step process: creating a small flap on the cornea and then reshaping the corneal surface, all in just a few minutes. To help you better understand, see the four pictures below.

HOW DO I KNOW IF LASIK IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Good news is that it probably is (yay!) but there is no sure-fire way of knowing until we see your eyes (pun intended). There is perhaps nothing more important in the LASIK process than determining if the procedure is, in fact, right for you. If you are familiar with someone who has not had a good result, the problems typically stem from poor judgment of candidacy. Here’s what to expect during your FREE LASIK consultation, which is basically a thorough, high-tech eye exam. Below is a list of the different tests and scans you will have at your consultation (we did say thorough, right?):- Dry eye testing
- Visual acuity and refractive error
- Visual field screening
- Pupil size in low & medium light
- Ocular pressure
- General health of the eyes
- Corneal topography and corneal thickness

LASIK FAQSHere are some of the most frequently asked questions we hear from people interested in LASIK. If you have a question that is not covered here call us at 800-MY-VISION (698-4746)! We’re happy to help.DOES LASIK HURT?This is one of the top questions we hear. In short, NO! Most of our patients describe the sensation during LASIK as a slight pressure. Before your procedure begins, your Mann Eye Institute surgeon will apply numbing drops (no injections, we promise!). You may also be given oral relaxation medication beforehand. Most of our LASIK patients are back to their regular routines the next day.HOW LONG DOES THE ACTUAL LASIK PROCEDURE TAKE?You’re going to love this. LASIK only takes about 10 minutes to complete both eyes. You’ll be up and back at it in no time!WHAT IF I ACCIDENTALLY BLINK DURING MY LASIK PROCEDURE?This is another common concern. But don’t worry, we have you covered. The numbing drops help take away the urge to blink and any blinking is prevented by an instrument called a lid speculum, which gently holds back your upper and lower eyelids. It will be put into place after you receive your numbing drops.CAN I SEE DURING THE PROCEDURE?Yes, you will be able to see throughout the entire procedure. That said, you will experience varying degrees of blurred vision as your Mann Eye Institute surgeon is working. Don’t worry! This is perfectly normal.HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY FROM LASIK?Patients who are extremely nearsighted might take a little longer to recover than individuals who are only slightly nearsighted. Although many of our patients wake up the next day with 20/20 vision, it is normal for some patients (those who have stronger prescriptions) to take a little more time for their eyes to adjust and heal completely.WHEN CAN I RETURN TO NORMAL ACTIVITIES AFTER LASIK?The majority of our LASIK patients report excellent vision within 24 hours of their surgery! Most are able to return to work and many normal activities the next day. You will have a follow-up appointment at Mann Eye Institute the day after your procedure for a quick post-op check. Any issues or questions you have will be addressed at that time.CAN LASIK CORRECT ASTIGMATISM AND FARSIGHTEDNESS?YES! Since it received FDA approval in the United States in 1995, LASIK has seen many advances and refinements. Today, we use LASIK to successfully treat patients with nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and even astigmatism. Schedule your FREE LASIK screening to see if you’re a candidate.DOES LASIK “FADE” OVER TIME?This is a common misconception. No, it doesn’t. LASIK creates a permanent change to the cornea, so the treatment will not fade over time. However as the eye ages, vision problems that are unrelated to the corneal surface can still occur, namely presbyopia (over-40 vision) and cataracts. When we assess your vision at Mann Eye Institute, we will determine which of our many advanced vision-correcting procedures is right for you.WHAT ARE THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH LASIK?As with any surgical procedure, there are certain risks. But please know that LASIK complications are extremely rare. During your free screening, our Mann Eye Institute counseling team will explain any risks associated with your procedure, so you can make an informed decision.IS LASIK COVERED BY INSURANCE?Great question. Because LASIK is considered an elective surgery, most insurance companies will not cover the procedure. But the majority of vision plans offer some type of discount and some even offer a discount on top of a current promotion. If you’re not sure, just come see us! Our financing team is more than happy to review your employer’s insurance policy to see if a portion of your LASIK procedure may be covered or if there is a discount available. We also work to help our patients establish a comfortable payment plan to fit nearly any budget.HOW OLD DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO HAVE LASIK?Since the eyes do not fully stabilize until a person is in their late teens or early 20s, it is required that Mann Eye Institute patients be at least 18 years old. Patients are also required to have a steady eye prescription that hasn’t changed for over a year. |
