Eye Muscle Imbalance

What Is Eye Muscle Imbalance?

There is an eye muscle imbalance when the eyes are unable to focus on an object simultaneously because one or several eye muscles are too weak to maintain balance. This forces a horizontal or vertical misalignment. Strabismus (crossed eyes) is a common eye muscle imbalance where the eyes look in different directions. Often, when strabismus is present in children, they ignore the image that is seen with the misaligned eye. This results in the normal eye becoming dominant and causes the misaligned eye to develop reduced vision (lazy eye or amblyopia).

Treatment of Eye Muscle Imbalance

It’s important to treat eye muscle imbalances as early as possible to prevent further damage or disorders. Treatments to cure eye muscle imbalances and disorders include prescription eyeglasses, or by covering or patching the dominant eye or muscle surgery. Eye exercises and eye drops may be used in conjunction with other treatments to strengthen and train the weaker eye and to regain balance.
