Think Again!

One of the most common things we hear at Mann Eye Institute is people telling us they didn’t think they would be a candidate for LASIK for one reason or another. In most cases, nothing could be further from the truth!

LASIK has come a long way since it first emerged on the ophthalmic scene in the 1990s. It remains the most popular refractive surgery in the U.S. today. Due to advances in technology and technique, today’s modern LASIK can accurately treat a wider array of common vision problems. Modern LASIK can now address nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. According to The American Refractive Surgery Council (ARSC), LASIK surgery enjoys an impressive 96% patient satisfaction rate, the highest of any elective procedure.

Most people are delighted to find they are actually ideal candidates for today’s modern LASIK procedures performed here at Mann Eye Institute. And even when they aren’t, we usually have another procedure up our sleeve that will do the trick! Want to find out if you’re a LASIK candidate? Let’s talk.

Reasons People Think They’re Not a Candidate for LASIK (and why they probably are!)

Many people falsely believe that LASIK only treats nearsightedness. But since it received FDA approval in the United States in 1995, LASIK has seen many, many advances and refinements. Today, we use LASIK to successfully treat patients with nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and even astigmatism. Schedule your FREE LASIK screening to see if you’re a candidate.

Other people think their prescription is too strong for LASIK. There are rare cases where LASIK may not be the best choice for a particular person. In the majority of cases, LASIK can correct challenging vision prescriptions.

Your prescription is measured in something called “diopters,” a metric unit used to indicate the strength of the lens. According to ARSC, advanced laser vision correction profiles have the potential to treat up to +6.00 diopters of hyperopia, astigmatism up to 6 diopters and nearsightedness up to -12.00 diopters, depending on the laser chosen for the treatment. The best way to know if you’re a candidate for LASIK is to have a thorough LASIK consultation by one of our board-certified ophthalmologists.

Finally, some people may have been told their corneas are too thin for LASIK. Since LASIK is a permanent reshaping of the cornea, it is important that there is an adequate corneal surface to work with. For this reason, people with very thin corneas do not make ideal LASIK candidates.

That said, Mann Eye Institute offers many other vision correcting procedures including PRK, ICL (Implantable Contact Lens) and Refractive Lens Exchange. These are great options for getting out of glasses and contacts and may be better choices for someone with very thin corneas or extreme nearsightedness. Again, talking candidly with one of our highly-qualified surgeons is the best way to find out which vision correcting procedure is right for you and your vision.
