From our founding days, giving back to the communities we serve has been an integral part of Mann Eye’s mission. And for the past three years in June, our Austin team does us proud by participating in TYLER’S Dam that Cancer event, a 21-mile stand-up paddle (and party) on Lake Austin, an event we are honored to sponsor. Dam That Cancer raises money for The Flatwater Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing mental health services and support for people (and their loved ones) affected by cancer.

Dam That Cancer 10th Anniversary Event

This year’s event, which was held on June 10, marked the 10th anniversary and to celebrate, the non-profit foundation set a goal to raise $1 million! Wow!! This year, there were more participants than ever before and we’re so excited to have been a part of such a life-changing undertaking.

In addition to being a major sponsor of the event, Mann Eye’s own Dr. David Tremblay has participated as a paddler for the last three years. “Cancer sucks,” said Dr. Tremblay. “We have all been affected by cancer either personally or through a loved one. The mental health therapies funded through the Flatwater Foundation are invaluable in helping families cope with this terrible disease. The Dam That Cancer paddle can be challenging and exhausting, but the mission and camaraderie make it all worthwhile. I’m honored to be a part of the foundation and hope to continue to support the cause.”

Dr. Tremblay was joined by Dr. Luke Barker this year. The two Austin-based surgeons donned their swimming trunks, slapped on their sunscreen, grabbed their paddle boards and hit the lake last weekend – all for a great cause!

“I was honored and excited to get involved with Flatwater Foundation and Dam That Cancer because I have seen the horrific impact cancer has on the spirit and mental health of patients, family and friends firsthand, being a physician, a son, a father, a grandson and a friend,” said Dr. Luke Barker. “The mental aspect of any disease can be more difficult to overcome and treat than any of the physical symptoms, at times. This was my third year supporting and first year paddling and I can’t wait to paddle again next year! Thanks to all who supported with your donations, positive vibes and prayers.”
