Mann Eye Institute’s Houston location welcomes Caroline Schmidt, M.D., to the dedicated and skilled team of ophthalmic specialists. Dr. Schmidt specializes in glaucoma treatment and surgery, cataract evaluation and surgery, and comprehensive eye exams, including evaluation of diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration.
“I am very excited to contribute my expertise in glaucoma to Mann Eye Institute’s innovative and progressive practice,” said Dr. Schmidt. “Ophthalmology is all about helping patients achieve a better quality of life by improving their vision. It is very gratifying to be able to enhance patients’ lives.”
Dr. Schmidt is a proud graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry with an emphasis on lab research. “After spending time in the lab, I quickly discovered that I needed to be in a field that worked directly with people. I’m definitely a people person,” she said. “Ophthalmology was a great fit for me. I use my background in science, but I also enjoy meeting and getting to know my patients and taking care of them over time.”
Dr. Schmidt earned her Medical Degree at University of Michigan Medical School. She then moved to Texas to complete her ophthalmology residency and glaucoma fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine’s renowned Cullen Eye Institute in Houston. During her glaucoma fellowship training, she specialized in cataract surgery and glaucoma surgery, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.
During her training, Dr. Schmidt received the prestigious Resident Excellence Award from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the Goar Award for excellent resident research from Baylor College of Medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Dr. Schmidt is originally from Michigan, but she recently married a native Houstonian and is happy to put down her roots down here in Texas. Dr. Schmidt and her husband love sports and enjoy attending Houston Astros and Houston Rockets games in their spare time. Dr. Schmidt also proudly cheers on her Notre Dame Fightin’ Irish football team every fall.
